Rutland Music

Rutland Music is part of Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust (NMPAT), who are the lead partner of the Northamptonshire and Rutland Music Hub (NRMH).  NRMH will support all schools and develop musical opportunities for the county.

Services for schools

Rutland Music works with primary schools across the county to ensure the National Plan for Music Education is delivered, and every student experiences musical opportunities during their primary school career.

All projects and services are designed to support existing provision and deliver the National Plan.

Services can be requested via the online Service Level Agreement (SLA), which is sent to schools by letter and email soon after the Easter break.  Information to guide you through the booking process can be found below – we have also created a prompt sheet to help you to gather all the necessary information before completing the online form.

The online form, linked on the letter and email sent to your school, must be completed in one sitting.  If you need additional help or support please contact the NMPAT Office (01604 637117 / office@nmpat.co.uk) or Iain McKnight: imcknight@nmpat.co.uk

With support from the National Music Grant, schools are required, as a minimum, to offer a 10-week whole class instrumental programme to one full cohort / year group.  This has replaced the previous Rutland programme of mandatory / core recorder programmes with optional additional orchestral instrument programmes.

Further information can be found at www.nmpat.co.uk/projects or on your SLA form sent to you in late April 2025.

Please visit www.nmpat.co.uk/curriculum for more information on National Curriculum music teaching in schools.

Please visit www.nmpat.co.uk/send for more information on SEND provision in schools.

An instrumental project for EYFS / KS1 consists of 5 weekly visits, designed so that a whole class can access this experience.  Each visit is made up of 30 minutes of delivery to up to 30 pupils.  All schools can access one fully-funded project.

With the Model Music curriculum in mind, non-specialist class teachers work alongside the NMPAT teacher, developing practical skills and knowledge that will support their continuing delivery of music.  For Reception class projects, reference will be made to the Early Years Framework and Musical Development Matters.

The cost of these 5-week music projects is £158. We aim to schedule projects alongside existing visits to keep the cost low for your school. If your school needs the project on a day without a Rutland Music/NMPAT visit, the cost increases to £285 due to our short visit policy (minimum 1-hour teaching time).
Alternatively, you can book two 5-week KS1 projects together for £300, creating a standalone 1-hour visit.

Please visit www.nmpat.co.uk/projects for more information on Music for Wellbeing projects.

Rutland Music’s successful drumming workshops are available to your school again this year.  Projects last for either a whole date or half-day and are designed for classes of up to 30 pupils, leading to a performance to the school.  We can also offer shorter sessions for multiple classes.

Our practitioners will lead your children in Djembe Drumming or Samba, depending on staff and instrument availability.

In addition to our regular CPD conference for Music Leads, Rutland Music / NMPAT are happy to support all aspects of your school’s musical development in providing bespoke consultancy support for:

  • induction of new staff
  • support for non-specialist teachers
  • creation and implementation of a School Music Development Plan
  • developing a music curriculum within your school
  • teaching and learning in the music classroom
  • support for Arts Mark application
  • preparation for Ofsted

Please contact Chris Jeffs, Director of Learning Development to discuss your needs: cjeffs@nmpat.co.uk

Rutland Musical Theatre was founded in 1980 by a small group of people who were keen to start the first ‘Musical Theatre’ Society in the county. It was founded from a love of music and theatre generally and also to preserve the name of Rutland – which at that time was under threat.

Acting and non-acting members welcome.

The first show was Showboat, performed in Uppingham Theatre in April 1981, and the company continues to perform a major musical each April.
