Tomorrow (Friday 31st October 2025) marks the end of an era at NMPAT as we say farewell to our Chief Executive, Peter Smalley, who retires after decades of service to music education. Peter’s vision and passion has shaped not only our organisation but also the wider music education landscape across Northamptonshire and beyond.

Throughout his career, Peter has championed the idea that music can open doors for young people and can change lives. From his early days as a teacher and conductor, and his years leading NMPAT, he has inspired generations of young musicians to find their voice, their confidence, and their community through music.

This month, Peter’s extraordinary contribution was recognised nationally when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Classic FM as part of their annual Music Teachers of the Year Awards, in association with ABRSM. The award is a wonderful recognition of everything Peter has given to NMPAT and the wider music community. He was also given the opportunity to give a speech on stage at the Royal Albert Hall at Classic FM Live on Monday 20th October.

In true NMPAT style, the celebrations haven’t stopped there! Earlier this week, Peter appeared on BBC Radio Northampton, where he was surprised by messages from alumni, staff, and friends; many of whom shared how his encouragement and guidance had shaped their musical journeys. The surprise even included a live performance from a brass quintet…

While we say goodbye to Peter with enormous gratitude, we also look forward with excitement to the next chapter in NMPAT’s story. We are delighted to welcome Charlotte Buxton as our new Chief Executive. Charlotte is a passionate advocate for music education who will continue to build on the strong foundations Peter has created. With her leadership, we are confident that NMPAT’s future will be every bit as inspiring as its past.

We wish Peter every happiness in his well-earned retirement and look forward to seeing how the next chapter unfolds!
