What is WCIT?
Whole Class Instrumental Tuition (WCIT) gives every child in a class the chance to learn an instrument together, taught by an NMPAT specialist teacher during the school day. For many children, it’s their very first step into the world of music.
What happens next?
If your child has enjoyed their lessons and wants to keep going, continuation lessons are available in beginner groups at school. Group lessons consist of 4-8 children for 30 minutes a week.
From as little as £6.88 per lesson (your school will have more information on costs).
How do I sign up?
Applications will open in November!
Why keep the music going?
Confidence and wellbeing: performing and progressing builds confidence, and gives children a sense of achievement that’s entirely their own.
Learning and focus: music has been linked to improved memory and concentration.
Friendships and teamwork: group lessons teach children to listen, collaborate and support each other.
A skill for life: continuing now builds on what they’ve already achieved, and opens doors to bands, orchestras and performance opportunities.

I’m a school
What is WCIT?
WCIT gives a whole class the chance to learn an instrument together, taught by an NMPAT specialist teacher. Projects run in schools across the county, and instruments vary by project (for example, brass one year and strings the next, so pupils experience a range over time).
How it works
Schools can choose the format that suits them:
- Full academic year
- Autumn and Spring term, with continuation lessons in Summer term
- Autumn term only, with continuation lessons in following terms
Continuation lessons
Pupils who want to keep learning can move on to group lessons delivered in school. For autumn-only projects, your school is billed termly for a block of lessons as agreed when you joined the project, so sign-up numbers really help with planning.
Resources to promote continuation
Everything you need to share with families:
- Parent email template
- A3 poster and flyers
- Information for parents on the benefits of learning music
