At NMPAT (Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust), we believe that the beauty of music and the arts lies in the diversity of its creators and participants. As a charity dedicated to providing music and performing arts education through lessons, ensembles, opportunities, and events, across Northamptonshire and Rutland, we are committed to nurturing an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued and understood. This commitment extends to embracing and supporting neurodiversity within our community.
What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is a concept that recognises the diversity of human brains and minds. It acknowledges that everyone experiences and interacts with the world differently. This diversity is a natural and valuable part of being human. In our everyday lives, we encounter various ways of thinking, feeling, and learning. At NMPAT, we embrace this diversity, understanding that every person brings their unique perspectives and strengths to the table.
What does NMPAT mean by ‘Neurodiverse’
We believe everyone experiences and interacts with the world differently. We are all unique, and every day is different. We are all neurodiverse.
Some people may identify as neurodivergent, or with a specific neurodiversity, such ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, DCD (developmental coordination disorder). For others, it could involve managing challenges such as executive dysfunction, dysgraphia, misophonia, slow processing speed, stammering, Tourette’s syndrome.
Neurodiversity is not limited to those with diagnosed conditions. It also includes the more subtle variations in how we all process information, cope with emotions, and handle daily challenges. Some days might be harder than others for no particular reason other than it feels a bit too “Tuesday” — a day when, perhaps, things just don’t seem to flow as easily.
Our commitment to supporting Neurodiversity
At NMPAT, we are dedicated to supporting all forms of neurodivergence. We aim to create a space where every student, parent, and staff member feels safe, supported, and included. Our approach is flexible and responsive, recognising that needs and experiences can change from day to day.
Here’s how we are fostering an inclusive environment:
- Individualised support: we offer tailored support and accommodations to ensure that each person can fully participate in our activities, regardless of their specific needs.
- Educating our community: we provide training to better understand and support neurodiverse individuals. This helps us to create an environment where everyone can thrive.
- Open communication: we encourage open dialogue with parents, students, and staff, to understand their experiences and how we can better support them. All feedback is invaluable in helping us grow and improve.
- Inclusive programming: our lessons, ensembles, and activities aim to be accessible to all. We aim to offer a range of opportunities to access tuition in all corners of our hub area, ensuring that everyone can find a way to engage with the arts that suits them.
